FREEDOM

With the concept of freedom in mind, I embarked on this piece with cliche notions of "breaking free," or being "free as a bird" in mind. It was only after farther contemplation that I realized these generic ideas could be conveyed in a non-literal sense by representing them abstractly versus graphically.

The paper sculpture, which was crafted using only one piece of paper, was scored and molded using an x-acto knife. After setting the entire sculpture up, it was photographed and brought into Photoshop where I was able to digitally modify the piece, exaggerating the shadows and highlights so the letterforms truly looked like they were breaking out of the confines of the paper sculpture.
